Your Guide to Buying a Dog Kennel
Buying a dog kennel for your dog can be a difficult task, first you have to know how big the kennel will have to be in order to fit your dog comfortably, and then you have to work out which manufacturer and type of kennel will suit your dog best. Hopefully I’ll be able to assist you with this task by giving you a few pointers that will hopefully show the way!
First things first, in order to purchase a kennel that will fit your dog comfortably, you’ll need to do a simple measurement. You’ll need to know the height of your dog, and it will also help if you know his weight. However, this isn’t as crucial. In short, the kennel must be able to facilitate your dog walking in, turning around and exiting without bumping its head. Buying a larger kennel that more than facilitates this has its pros and cons, but largely, it doesn’t matter if you opt for this – unless of course, you live in an extremely cold or hot environment, in which case, it would matter. Choosing the right size kennel ensures the best comfort for your dog.
The Measurements
The door of the proposed kennel shouldn’t be any larger than three fourths of the measurement from the dogs shoulders to its feet. The measurement doesn’t need to be taken from its head as most dogs duck into the kennel. To give you a better example, if a dog has a measurement of 19 inches, the kennel door needs to be at least 14 inches in height.
The next measurement entails the width of the kennel and it shouldn’t be any less wide than 25% of the width (the measurement of the dog’s nose to its backside) of the dog. For example, if the dog measures 24 inches, the width shouldn’t be less than 30 inches.
The final measurement includes the height of the dog. The kennel should be at least 25% higher than the height of the actual dog. This should allow for perfect movement and comfort on the dog’s part.
